Meet Candice Gliatto, Founder and Hair Stylist of Citrus Salon in Downtown Martinez.
I met Candice a few years ago, during the time that my husband and I were looking for a space to open Del Cielo Brewing Co. I admire Candice work ethic, the beautiful business that she’s built and her incredible commitment to St. Baldrick’s Foundation.
For the past 8 years, Candice has been organizing a shave-a-thon during the month of March to raise money and awareness for childhood cancer research. This year, she will be partnering with the Martinez community for two great events:
- March 9th | St.Baldrick’s Kick-Off at Del Cielo Brewing Co.
- March 17th | Downtown Martinez St. Baldrick's Shave-a-thon
Here’s my chat with Candice:
Hello Candice! Tell me about your background.
Hi! I’m the proud owner of Citrus Salon in Downtown Martinez.
Directly out of high school I attended cosmetology school and in 2009, at 23 years old I opened the first Citrus in a small but mighty, 2 chair, 400 square foot location right here on Main Street. From day one, our mission has been to serve our community and our community has certainly reciprocated that. In 10 years, we have grown our team from 2 people to 22 and in July of 2017 we moved to our third location on the 600 block of Main Street. Along the road I got married, became a mom, and developed a passion for small business development. From 2013 to 2018 I served on the Main Street Martinez Board of Directors where I was able to partner with some amazing people who shared my love for our community.
How did you discover your love for hair styling?
I honestly can’t remember ever considering doing anything else! I started practicing on my little sister when we were little kids. Now she works at Citrus as a Senior stylist! Guess it’s in our blood.
Tell me about your upcoming St. Baldrick's event in Downtown Martinez.
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a non-profit fundraising organization that supports research for childhood cancer. In the US, more children die of childhood cancer than all other disease combined, yet only 4% of of US Federal funding for cancer research goes towards childhood cancer.
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation raises money for research through their signature head shaving events where participants pledge to shave their heads in solidarity with children battling cancer. Friends and family support their cause by offering donations "on their head". It’s been 8 years since Tessa Heuer, my fellow Citrus stylist and event co-host, first partnered with Jim Blair of Creek Monkey Tap House to host the first Shave-a-thon. Over the last 8 years we have shaved hundreds of heads, raised just shy of $200,000, and became the new host for the Martinez St. Baldrick’s Foundation Shave-a-thon. This year’s event is on Sunday, March 17th at 11am in the Main Street Plaza and will feature booths from local businesses, live music from the Martinez Music Mafia, and face painting for kids.
What difference would you like to make in your community?
I’d like to do my part to create a sense of place and pride in Downtown Martinez. We are so incredibly lucky to have this beautiful neighborhood right by the waterfront with some absolutely amazing businesses. It’s been so wonderful to watch our Downtown grow. I can’t wait to see what the next few years will bring.
